I don't know how it is for all of you, but that's all I've been hearing about for the last couple months. I'm excited that most everyone will be on the same page.......It's always hard getting that student from another state! I'm not excited about all the extra work I'm doing for it though. I'm in the process of changing all of my plans and lessons so that I can make sure I'm meeting all those common core standards. I feel that's all I think about and search for anymore!!! For those of you that feel the same way I thought I would share some great finds that are helping me along the way. :)

First, let me begin by telling you that I have a common core pinterest page where most of this stuff can be found! Click here to check it out. I have pinned many assessments, activities, and much more from blogs out there.

I have also included the common core app widget on the side bar to the right. Open it to find the standards for all grades and subjects. If you would like to get the common core app for on the go access click here.

Two new and useful blog sites...

These sites are meant for k-12 teachers who will be implementing the National Common Core State Standards. You can search for your grade and then the specific standard you are looking for. Some items are free and some cost money (however it goes to fellow teachers so that makes it worth it). It is constantly being updated with new lessons so you should check it often!!!

If your like me and you love technology...here is a great new online practice platform for elementary grades. Best part is...it's 100% common core aligned and if that wasn't enough...it's free for teachers!!! Scootpad generates continuously personalized practices for each student with no intervention from the teacher. There is a downside to it though :( As of right now it's only for grades 1, 2, and 3. However, they are working hard to get grades K, 4, and 5 up by August.

Our schools Math Coach has always been a big advocate for CPALMS. This site has amazing resources for teachers in both math and ELA subject areas including lesson plans, assessments, games, and more. They are currently converting everything over to CCSS.

I hope these will help you feel better about all this common core talk! If I find anymore resources I'll add them to this post and my pinterest board too of course. :)
Since my very first year, my students had a fish that was moved up a fishbowl when an undesirable behavior occurred. The higher up the fish bowl, the more severe the consequence. This system worked for me, but I always felt like it focused on the negative. We've been told more and more that positive reinforcement is better for the students. Over the years I started to incorporate more positive behavior charts around the room like a mystery line walker chain and brownie points (I'll explain those in a future post). I still wasn't happy with my overall behavior management system though. Last year my school developed school wide rules. We called these our "SHINES": Show respect, Have a positive attitude, I will work hard, Never give up, Everyone cooperates, and Safety counts. Of course, teaching Kindergarten, we had to help our kids understand what each rule meant so we went into it a little more. I will say that I liked having our whole grade level on the same page! It made it easier to know what to say to a student from another class if they were misbehaving. We all changed how we notified parents and tweaked our weakly notes home. I was much happier this year, but it still wasn't enough.

Then, Pinterest came into my life!!! Who doesn't love it! I noticed a lot of people pinning this clip chart behavior system. So, I thought I would take a look and.....I have decided.......this is the change I've been looking for!!! Now, that is when my OCD really kicked in and I went into clip chart overdrive. I found as much as I could about it. After looking through it all, some stuff I'll use, some I won't, and some I'm adapting for my classroom needs. Here are the most useful sites I found...

This is a link to the e-book written by the creator of the Clip Chart behavior management system Rick Morris. It goes in depth into the program and will answer all your questions about it.

Bunting, Books, and Bainbridge has a great explanation of the program on her blog. She includes a parent explanation letter, a happy postcard for when they reach outstanding, a behavior reflection note for students to fill out, the link I found to the e-book, and so much more!!!

This is the actual chart I decided to go with. It comes from Live, Love, Laugh Everyday in Kindergarten. I printed it from a color printer, put it together, then laminated it twice for durability.

There are so many great ideas out there so I thought I would provide you with all the stuff I found so that you too can decide if this is for you. Most of it I found by doing a broad 'clip chart' search in Pinterest and Google images. I recommend doing the same if you are truly interested! Most of my things were found out in blog land so I only have one thing of my own to share. Here is my parent letter (in Google docs) in case you are looking for an idea on how to communicate this system to them. Since I haven't actually used this program in my classroom, I will post an update of how it goes once the school year has begun. I'm hoping I can make the adjustment!!! If you have any suggestions for me please comment below. =)

Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08691360090969310890noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2935697782039775203.post-89363494261651605212012-06-23T11:41:00.000-04:002012-06-23T11:41:56.757-04:00Rainbows and Pots of Gold
I can't believe the last thing I talked about was winter! After looking at the pictures I had taken throughout the year, I decided going back that far was too much. So, I decided to start with spring instead. Of course this begins with St. Patrick's Day! During this unit we talk a lot about rainbows, colors, and color mixing.

I found this rainbow hands idea from Artzy Creations. It was such a great pinterest find! I was lucky enough

to have a wonderful parent volunteer help with this project. It took us a couple tries to figure out the best and fastest way to do it, but eventually she got all 18 students hands painted with the 6 different colors of the rainbow. They created clouds with cotton balls at the ends of it. I also added this cute poem to the rainbow...I always have to add some other academic element to a craft so my students get the most out of it! Here is a link to the document if you would like to use it.

Another pinterest find came from Mrs. Plant's Press. Check out her St. Patrick's Day ideas here. The kids made torn paper rainbows. They cut out the pot and gold and glued it all together. After they had to finish the sentence...If I found a pot of gold I would... Some of the kids got very creative with this. I also couldn't believe how many said they would share it or give it to their parents! So sweet. :)

If I found a pot of gold I would...grab it. Colton

If I found a pot of gold I would...hide it in the closet. Savannah

A very simple craft that we did was painting a rainbow with water colors. Once the students finished painting they colored the sky with blue crayon and added the mixed up sentence they had been working on...I see the pretty rainbow.

We did many other projects with four leaf clovers and leprechauns, but I forgot to take pictures of those so I guess they can wait till next year. By then who knows what other fantastic creations I might have added to the unit!

Boy, it went by fast. My first year as a blogger didn't go as planned. I wasn't able to post as often as I would have liked. :( I just couldn't find the time between being a single mom, teaching, creating and implementing all my new Pinterest finds to get on here.I did take lots of pictures throughout the year so I am going to be posting all of them soon. I'm hoping this will just give everyone a head start for next year. :) I know I will be busy this summer creating things for next school year. My favorite Pinterest quote yet...

I know I won't just be pinning things, but making them as well!!! I hopefully will be able to do that and write some posts too so keep an eye out for them! :)
Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08691360090969310890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2935697782039775203.post-19425251660862112682012-02-01T17:56:00.001-05:002012-02-01T17:56:55.178-05:00Winter WonderlandI love teaching Florida kids about the Winter season. Although it is a hard season to teach in Florida, especially this year, since we don't ever get snow and rarely get really cold weather. Two science experiments that I found on Pinterest this year really helped the kids to understand what snow and cold weather are all about.
The first is called Instant Snow. You can purchase it here if interested.

The second experiment was perfect since we were learning about the states and changes of matter in science.

Fill balloons with water- small, medium, and large- and place in bowls with the tied side down so it will create a flat surface. Lay something on top of the balloons to create a flat surface on the top as well. Once frozen, remove balloon and stack balls using salt to help them adhere to each other. To help my students understand Winter we do a lot of crafts about snow, snowmen, snowflakes, and we talk about how to stay warm when it's cold outside. Here are some of our projects:

We read the book...and then created our own "puffy" snowmen. To create the puffy effect, mix equal parts of Elmer's glue and shaving cream. We let them dry then decorated with construction paper and wrote a describing sentence about our snowmen.

Based on the book All You Need for a Snowman, we created a First, Next, Last picture of the steps to creating a snowman. Some students got really creative!!!

This was a center they completed on their own. I provided all the pieces and they created their own snowmen.

Some extra activities you can try are editable snowmen. Use powdered donuts, candy corns, and brown icing to create a snowman face. We also made these ornaments for Christmas, but I couldn't resist sharing them in this post. The kids painted snowmen on clear ornaments (blue looks nice too) with white acrylic paint on their hands. Next, they decorated it with paint markers. This is one of my favorite crafts for this time of year!!!

You can go check out this website Make-a-Flake to create online snowflakes from paper. After practicing on the website students can go create and cut out their own snowflakes from paper. I hung our up on our class tree.

Of course I also take this time to talk about animals that live in cold habitats like penguins. We read a lot of books about penguins. Then the students do a step-by-step drawing of a penguin and write some facts about it. To help them with this we completed a tree map.
Beginning today I'm going to be changing all of it over so that if an app sounds interesting to you, all you have to do is scroll over the title and a link to the app in itunes will appear. This will make it much easier for everyone to find the exact app I'm talking about. Hopefully this process won't take too long! Here is the link back to my page iPad/iPhone apps :) If you have an app that you really love, please, please, please, leave a comment below. I'm always looking for new apps!!!
So I know I'm way late in posting about Thanksgiving, but I thought better late than never!

First we made step-by-step drawings of turkeys. Next, we added a silly turkey story to go with it.

This was a center the kids had so much fun doing!

Our sight words were written n turkeys, which I placed around the room. They had to find the correct color and write the sight word next to it.

We recreated these adorable turkeys from Mrs. Miner's Kindergarten Monkey Business. For a free copy of the pattern go here.

We did a turkey hand print to go with our turkey poem.

Wow...this year is flying by! We've been having so much fun in the classroom working on all our fun fall activities. I'm so glad I finally found some time to share them.

We decorated our bulletin boards outside our classroom with our scarecrows and tissue paper leaves The poem on the tissue paper leaves was a fantastic pinterest find! We lined the wall with our "fall is" pictures. Students cut out the tree and sun, then glued on ripped orange, brown, yellow, and red construction paper for the leaves. They had to complete the sentence fall is...which I typed and cut out in the shape of a cloud.

We had to show our class tree changing with the seasons as well. We finger painted with fall colors to make leaves which we added to the tree and ground below.

Of course we did a study on bats. We did a step-by-step bat drawing. They added a moon to show their bats flying in the night then had to write a bat fact.

We also did a unit on spiders. Kids created a spider which they had to add a spider fact to. The kids marble painted spider webs with white paint on black paper. Then they created 1, 2, or 3 purple thumbprint spiders. They completed the sentence __ see ___purple spiders.
Our Halloween was filled with lots of exciting centers. We made ghosts (bananas and chocolate icing), spiders (Oreo, black licorice, icing, and skittles), and boogers on a stick (pretzel sticks and green cheeze wiz). Another fun center was pin the stem on the pumpkin.
All of the other pictures have students faces so I don't want to post them. I can tell you that we had number bingo, sight word bingo, ghost drop, roll and count spider legs, Halloween patterns, Halloween circle map, Halloween write the room, planting pumpkin seeds, Halloween card making, alphabet dot-to-dot, more/less/same Halloween pictures game, Halloween book and bones bingo song.Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08691360090969310890noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2935697782039775203.post-31393223130544375702011-10-09T13:35:00.002-04:002011-10-09T13:35:51.414-04:00Who doesn't love a HERO!!!
My favorite math activities are our Zero the Hero days. Zero the Hero comes to visit us when ever our 'day in school' ends with a zero. On that day, I put up Zero The Hero by our calendar. The students get so excited when they see him in the morning because they know that means he's left us a special surprise somewhere in our classroom. Throughout the day the kids see if they can find his surprise.

This is our calendar board. Our daily schedule is from Mrs. Carroll over at The First Grade Parade. Above our schedule is our learning targets. Our team has decided to use weekly targets with our math topic, letter, sight word, and science topics for that week. We go over this daily first thing in the morning. We use Brownie Points as a class incentive for doing good deeds. The class can earn them by showing respect, listening, and following directions.10 brownie points gets the mystery prize under the question mark. Next is our calendar and weather chart.
Here's what it looks like:
The students each have their own 3 pronged pocket folder. Inside is a calendar, weather graph, days in school, tally chart, zero the hero, birthday chart, and tooth chart. Most of these will stay for each month, but I will add or change pages out so that it doesn't start to get boring. For instance, I just added a days of the week paper with the October calendar. To make this time more exciting I also loaded the pages into an ActivInspire flip chart. While I'm demonstrating on the board the students are working in their folders. Here are some pictures of us working in our Calendar Folders...
Here is how we do our days in school. We add a straw for the day, count the straws, then the calendar person writes the number and puts up the correct number word. I got that sheet from What The Teacher Wants. If your interested in any of the documents above or are interested in starting your own calendar folder here are some links to those blogs that introduced it to me...

Many came from Kathleen over at Growing Kinders. Here is a link to her most recent post about her calendar folder. She also blogged about it here in March.

Another great blog about them was from Stephanie over at Aloha Kindergarten.

My folder cover and calendar pages came from Ms. Gonzalez's Classroom Website.

The weather and tally pages came from Heidisongs. She also offers some literacy printables that can go into your calendar folder.

Shari Sloane has a site with some great printables too including the zero the hero page.

Open house was a huge success this year! I was so excited to have 16 out of my 18 students show up for this very important night!!! Here are some new pictures of our classroom with all our work on display. The kids were so excited to show all of the parents their hard work over the first couple of weeks. :)

I found this idea off of Pinterest and loved it! We read this cute rhyming story to go with it.

We talked about all the different colors and about how fun it would be if we could paint ourselves. We then traced our arms and hands and painted them. When the paint was dry we adding lines and shapes to it. Once the poster was complete it turned into a helping hands lesson and we talked about why we should help each other and about working together.

Over in our writing center we graphed which hand we right with. I do this every year and every year the kids are amazed at how many kids write with their right hands. Of course after this lesson they all try the other hand to see how hard it really is!

Our self-portraits are one of my favorite activities. While looking in a mirror, each child drew the picture first and then they painted it. The speech bubble contains the answer to the question...What do you like about Kindergarten?

This was our very first homework assignment. Students took the leaves home and decorated them with personal pictures, magazine clippings, or drawings of their favorite things. We shared them and then put them up on our family tree. This tree stays up all year and changes with the seasons. Stay tuned for more pictures of it!

Students brought home a "me doll" template with the goal to decorate it in order to tell us a little bit more about them. They are always so cute and really show each students personality!

I am so excited!!! My blog received it's first award! =) Ms. Trinh over at The Teacher Tattles has given my blog the "I heart your blog award". This blogging world is so new to me, but I'm loving all the fantastic ideas I've found. This school year will truly be the best because of all these wonderful blogs (it really was hard to pick my top 10):
HarryKindergarten has made some of the most amazing videos ever!!! His videos range from transitions, to math, science, reading, social studies, even social skills like tattling and so much more. I also love that he uses some of the artists that I already use in the classroom. On his page he even says "My music is heavily influenced by Jack Hartmann. If you like Dr. Jean, Shari Sloane, Rhonda Crigger, Greg and Steve, or Mark D. Pencil, you might enjoy HarryKindergarten!" He is the one that got me hooked on youtube and hooked on finding more videos for use in my classroom. I have shared his videos with everyone at my school and they have been a big hit with us all! I couldn't decide which videos to share here so I thought I would share some of my class favorites from last year. These videos were requested DAILY by my class (I even got tears one time when I said we didn't have time!!!).
Towards the middle of last school year I found a ton of song/videos that the kids absolutely loved. I was really excited to start this year off with those videos. I can't believe how, once again, the kids have fallen in love with them. I thought I would start sharing some of them with you.

The first is a series from Have Fun Teaching. I will admit that when I first found one of the letter videos I thought "this is too repetitive and the kids will get board, but I'll try it anyway". OMG was I wrong. Not only did the kids love them, but I found myself addicted to them as well. The music is so catchy and the kids pick up the words so quickly because of the repetitiveness of the songs. Please go check them out!!!

Here is the alphabet video. It goes over letter identification and sounds!

Our county teaches the letters out of order. Our first letter is Mm. Here is that video.

Have Fun Teaching just started making sight word videos too. I'm sure the kids are going to love these as well. Here is the video for the sight word the.

I came across a very cute name game from Keeping Up with the Kindergartners today that I plan on starting this week. Everyday I will pick one student to be the Name Game Student Of The Day. I will write the students name on a sentence strip and read it, then I will cut it apart and place each letter in the pocket chart as we cheer "give me a ___" "What does that spell?" students will all yell out the name and the student of the day will come to the board. I will mix up the letters and they have to put it back together saying the letters as they do. Next, all the students will draw a picture of the student of the day and label it. When everyone is finished, we will turn it into a class book that they get to take home. Jody, at Camp Kindergarten, has also created a cute book cover to go with it. You can check it out here.
He doesn't want to go to school, so his mother shares an old family secret with her tearful boy to make his night at school easier.
Shutterfly.com is a great way to share pictures. It's private and people can only access your pictures if you add their email address to the account. I created my account thinking that was all you could do, but found out you can add a calendar which will send out email reminders to parents for field trips, volunteer schedule, birthdays, holiday parties, and so much more. Plus, parents can download and upload photos to the site too. This is yet another new thing that I will have to keep up with this school year, but I'm excited to see how it all works out. I also just found a free shutterfly ipad app. Love those apps!!!
Most apps I found from the internet or posts on blogs so I think it's only fair that I too share my findings. Since this is the first year I'll be using an ipad in the classroom I'm not quite sure which ones will be used the most. For that reason I will eventually put my top picks in bold. I've also created a page at the top of my screen so that you can easily see my updates to this list. Enjoy!!! =)
Not quite sure what those are. My mission today is to figure them out. Stay posted...

*update~I figured them out! I also found a great blog that explains them and what to do if you want to be a part of or start a Linky Party. linky party tutorial

*update 2~Joined my first linky party...it was so easy! Love my new blog button created by my colleague Mrs. I!!! Makes joining linky parties a lot easier. :)
So I thought I would try to post a file on here. I'm still trying to figure this blogging stuff out...

Thought this was a cute idea for my meet the teacher day "How your child gets home" sign in sheet.

*update: Didn't post the way I wanted it to, tried to delete post, but couldn't figure that out either. Hope I get the hang of this soon.Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08691360090969310890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2935697782039775203.post-74785274265879270262011-08-07T19:16:00.001-04:002011-08-08T23:43:32.062-04:00PinterestWhile creating my blog, I've been looking at other teachers blogs to get some ideas on what to include in mine. I kept coming across this Pinterest subject. I didn't give it any thought at first, thinking it was some online social thing. My curiosity got the best of me though and I had to go check it out. Now I'm totally addicted to it!!! Basically it's a way of tagging pictures that your interested in. They can be pictures about anything or on any topic. I've really focused on Education pins so far, but I'm already starting to branch out after just a couple of days. It's so much fun and I'm getting so many great ideas...LOVE IT! :0) You can follow my boards and pins by clicking on my red Follow Me On Pinterest link to the right.
